On Saturday May 10th, thousands gathered on Knowle High Street over the course of the day for a community celebration marking 80 years since the end of World War II in Europe. The VE80 event, organised by Visit Knowle, transformed the High Street into a lively hub of entertainment, history, and local pride from 11am to 5pm.
Attendees enjoyed an unforgettable day filled with live music, dazzling performances, artisan markets, vintage vehicles, and a much-loved dog show. The heartwarming atmosphere was vibrant as residents and visitors alike came together to celebrate peace, community spirit, and Knowle.
Highlights included crowd-pleasing performances from local favourites like Amy Price and the Warwickshire Dance Academy, a bustling artisan market curated by CJ Events Warwickshire, and an engaging open mic showcasing local talents Emily McCarthy, Garfield Mayor, Hannah Hamer, Lily Hughes, Freddie Hobbis, and El Sam. DJ Diego kept the energy high with upbeat sets throughout the day.
Adding to the historic ambiance were Steve Chaplin’s military vehicles and the beautiful 1933 MG Midget brought along by Stuart and his brother, who also posed as war photographers for the day.
The inaugural dog show, hosted by Pet’s World, proved ever so popular, with visitors cheering on four-legged friends in categories like Cutest Puppy and Best in Show – all in support of Wythall Animal Sanctuary.
Knowle’s community groups and local businesses played a pivotal role in the day’s success. From the tireless work of volunteer marshals to decorated shop windows, every corner of Knowle High Street contributed to a true village celebration.
Organisations joined in too with exhibitions at Knowle library and at Knowle Parish Church.
“We were absolutely delighted to see so many people on the High Street enjoying the VE80 celebrations,” said Jenna Porch, one of the event organisers. “It’s a real reflection of the amazing community spirit here in Knowle.”
Sue, fellow organiser, added: “There was such a buzz on the High Street all day. It was wonderful to see the community come alive with music, laughter and togetherness.”
Dave Pinwell gave special thanks to the volunteers: “We simply couldn’t do this without the dedication of our volunteer marshals. Their support ensures everything runs smoothly and safely – we’re incredibly grateful. We’re also grateful for our volunteers Simon, Mary and Kim on the events team who put so much hard work into the preparations.”
Visit Knowle also extended its thanks to The Worshipful the Mayor of Solihull, who delivered a heartfelt speech and spent time engaging with attendees, and to Amy from Knowle Church for her warm words during the event.
As organisers, we would once again like to express gratitude to sponsors The Marketing Pod, Tirebuck Recruitment, No Thirty One Kitchens, Durant & Co, and Pets World for their vital contributions, as well as to local businesses who supported the event from start to finish.
As the sun set on a joyful and meaningful day, one thing was clear: Knowle’s VE80 celebration was more than an event – it was a testament to the power of community.
